HC Deb 21 December 1967 vol 756 c480W
Mr. Oakes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the average amount of maintenance awarded by magistrates' courts on each affiliation order during each of the years 1965, 1966, and 1967 to date.

Mr. Ennals:

I regret that this information is not available. I understand that research by Bedford College in the University of London, based on a sample of all orders made has shown that the average amount of orders made in England and Wales in 1966 was 33s. a week.

Mr. Oakes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many warrants were issued by magistrates' courts for arrears of payment of maintenance under affiliation orders; and how many defaulting fathers were imprisoned for such arrears.

Mr. Taverne:

I regret that the information asked for in the first part of the Question is not available. In 1966, 462 men were received into prisons in England and Wales for non-payment of arrears of maintenance under affiliation orders.

Mr. Oakes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many affiliation orders were made by magistrates' courts during each of the years 1965, 1966, and 1967 to date.

Mr. Ennals:

6,951. 7,458 and, in the first half of 1967, 3,888, respectively.
