Mr. Gresham Cookeasked the Minister of Transport whether, in order to establish what effect the Road Safety Act, 1967 has had on accidents, she will investigate the part played by consumption of alcohol on the part of the drivers involved in accidents and what other factors were involved, such as road or weather conditions, vehicle faults and the extent to which any bad driving arose from a driver's alcohol consumption or his normal incompetence.
§ Mr. Carmichael:Such investigations are already in hand as part of the continuing study of the causes of road accidents. In particular cases it may be impossible to determine whether a driver's error was due to alcohol or some other factor, but studies of the working of the Road Safety Act should add to our knowledge of the general connection between alcohol and road accidents.
