HC Deb 14 December 1967 vol 756 c198W
47. Mr. Doig

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners were employed on the production of jute bags; how many bags were produced; and what was the value of the sales of these bags for each of the last four six-monthly periods to the nearest convenient date.

Mr. Taverne:

It would be a breach of contractual confidence to give figures of sales.

Following is the information for prisons in England and Wales in answer to the first two parts of the Question:

Average number of prisoners employed Number of bags produced
October, 1965 to March, 1966 99 1,119,000
April, 1966 to September, 1966 61 1,298,000
October, 1966 to March, 1967 30 1,052,000
April, 1967 to September, 1967 40 1,867,800

61. Mr. Deedes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what estimate he has made of the number of prisoners eligible for release early next year under the provisions for parole in the Criminal Justice Act, 1967.

Mr. Callaghan:

Nearly 5,000 will be eligible for parole, but I cannot yet say how many will be suitable.
