HC Deb 14 December 1967 vol 756 cc205-6W
73. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Postmaster-General why, in view of improved road and rail services, and general technological advance there is a reduction in the collection and delivery of mail and a letter takes three times as long to reach a given point and costs four times as much compared with pre-war.

Mr. Edward Short:

As regards service reductions and increased charges I would refer my hon. Friend to my reply to his Question on 27th July. Most fully paid letters are delivered by the day after posting; but if he knows of inordinate delays arid will let me have details I shall be glad to look into them.—[Vol. 751. c.225–6.]

Mr. Henry Clark

asked the Postmaster-General what percentage of letters posted in Ballymena before 6 p.m. and addressed to the central area of Belfast are delivered by first post in Belfast next morning.

Mr. Joseph Slater:

Fully paid letters addressed to the central area of Belfast and posted in time for the 5.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. collection are due to be delivered by the first delivery next weekday. This standard of service is almost always being given.
