§ 73. Sir J. Edenasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what assurances were given by Her Majesty's Government to the National Liberation Front at the recent Geneva discussions concerning the integrity of Aden, in view of the continued military presence of Egypt in the Yemen.
§ Mr. Goronwy RobertsNone, though we fully recognise the integrity of Southern Yemen. Our information is that the United Arab Republic withdrawal from the Yemen will be completed by 15th December as announced.
§ 74. Mr. Eldon Griffithsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will make a further statement on the future of British relations with the South Yemen Republic and the island of Perim.
§ Mr. Goronwy RobertsThe United Kingdom and the National Liberation Front delegations in Geneva agreed that Britain would recognise the new State of the People's Republic of Southern Yemen from Independence Day, 30th November. The joint communiqué issued on 29th November stated that diplomatic relations would be established and ambassadors exchanged.
My right hon. Friend informed my hon. Friend the Member for Lancaster (Mr. Henig) on 30th November that Her Majesty's Government are ready formally to recognise the adherence to the new Republic of the island of Perim in accordance with the expressed wishes of the island's inhabitants.—[Vol. 755, c. 167–8.]
