§ Mr. James Davidsonasked the Minister of Health what is his policy regarding the possible use of artificial cyclamate 225W sweeteners in the type of cheap confectionery which has a special appeal to children; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. HoyI have been asked to reply. My right hon. Friend and my right hon. Friend the Minister of Health have accepted the advice of the Food Additives and Contaminants Committee that there would be no risk to health in allowing the use of cyclamates in food without statutory limitation except for that already laid down in the Soft Drinks Regulations 1964, and we have made the Artificial Sweeteners in Food Regulations 1967 accordingly.
The hon. Member will recall the statement which my right hon. Friend made to the House on 26th July when announcing these regulations that it is our intention to keep the use of cyclamates in all foods under continuous review. This will apply to uses in confectionery.—[Vol. 751, c. 725–6.]
