"Separate figures are not kept by my Department in respect of public schools. But under the definition provided in the terms of reference of the Public Schools Commission, the number of public schools in England and Wales in February, 1966 was 276, containing 107, 120 pupils of whom 62,292 (58.2 per cent.) were boarders".

NOTE

The definition of a "public school" for the purpose of the Commission is "any independent school currently in membership of:

(i) the Headmasters' Conference

(ii) the Governing Bodies' Association

or (iii) the Governing Bodies of Girls' Schools Association."
