Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Defence (1) if he will state the names and rank or position of the Geraghty Committee, and the date on which he set it up;

(2) when the committee set up under the chairmanship of Mr. Geraghty, on the Financial Organisation of Defence Resources will report and whether he intends to publish the report;

(3) if he will state the terms of reference of the Geraghty Committee.

The Study Group on Defence Organisation was set up in April, 1965. Its terms of reference wereTo examine the scope for changes in organisation which would make for the more efficient and economical operation and administration of our forces:

  1. (a) in the unified commands in the Far East and Middle East;
  2. (b) in other overseas commands including Germany;
  3. (c) in the United Kingdom.
To advise on the implications of such changes for the organisation of the Ministry of Defence Headquarters".

The Chairman of the Study Group was Mr. W. Geraghty, a Deputy Under-Secretary of State. He was assisted by a senior officer of each of the Services, an economic adviser and an industrialist.

The Study Group reported in May, 1966. It is not intended to publish the report.
