Mr. Tinn

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will state for the year ended 31st March, 1967, the number of applicants for plant and machinery grants from firms in the North-East development districts, the number approved, the estimated amount and employment, the number of applications rejected, and the number under consideration.

Mr. Darling

Plant and machinery grants have been replaced by investment grants and no applications were accepted after 31st March, 1966. In respect of the North-East part of the Northern Development Area offers to a total value of£1,519,724 involving 255 applications, were made in the period: the resulting employment from the associated schemes of which the plant and machinery formed part was estimated by the applicants at 16,391. 134 applications were rejected and 99 are under consideration.
