HC Deb 17 April 1967 vol 745 c48W
Mr. Peter Walker

asked the Minister of Transport how many accidents in each of the years from 1960 were caused by tyre failure; and in how many cases the accident was due to a badly worn tyre.

Mr. Swingler

This information is not available, but the Area Road Safety Unit in Hampshire reports that tyres were found to be defective in 1 per cent. of the 25,000 injury accidents they analysed in the three years 1963–65. In about 80 per cent. of these accidents the tyres had burst or deflated and in 20 per cent. the tyres were smooth or worn.
