HC Deb 04 April 1967 vol 744 c19W
Mr. Rowland

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the estimated amount of oil discharged by the "Torrey Canyon" when first wrecked; what was the estimated amount of oil discharged between the first news of the accident and 28th March; what was the estimated amount of oil still undischarged on 28th March; and what was the estimated amount destroyed by bombing of the ship.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

Firm estimates are not practicable but about 30,000 tons of oil were discharged when the ship foundered; around 50,000 tons had been further discharged by 28th March, and it is believed that about 40,000 tons were still undischarged on that date, practically all of which is believed to have been destroyed by bombing by 30th March.

Mr. Rowland

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department at what point the "Torrey Canyon" was declared to be derelict.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The owners served notice of abandonment on the underwriters at 9.30 a.m. on Tuesday, 28th March.
