HC Deb 04 April 1967 vol 744 c18W
54. Dr. John Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will take steps to encourage young people, students and older schoolchildren to go to the South-West in organised groups to assist in the cleaning of the beaches and the coastline of oil.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

Arrangements of this kind would require extensive and detailed organisation by the local and other authorities concerned. The need for further volunteers is being kept under review, but the present situation does not justify an appeal on the lines suggested.

55. Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will now consider employing the fire engines at present awaiting a national emergency at Dunkeswell Aerodrome, near Exeter, to help clean the oil from the beaches of Devon and Cornwall.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The use of emergency fire equipment was authorised on 23rd March. Issues of equipment from Dunkeswell and other Home Office stores are being made as necessary.
