HC Deb 15 November 1966 vol 736 cc63-4W
Mr. Wall

asked the President of the Board of Trade what estimate he has made, in considering the effects of the application of United Nations mandatory sanctions against South Africa, of the additional unemployment which would be caused to the motor industry by the closing of the industry's largest export market in South Africa.

Mr. Jay

I have not considered it necessary to make this calculation. Her Majesty's Government are fully aware of the importance of the South African market to our motor vehicle and other industries; and Lord Caradon has twice reminded the United Nations, on 1st December, 1965, in the Special Political Committee and again on 19th October last in the General Assembly, of the limitations which this places upon our economic actions.
