HC Deb 15 November 1966 vol 736 c51W
Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Minister of Technology if he will make a statement on the progress in Scotland of his campaign on automation; what response he is getting from industry; and to what extent the universities are co-operating in the venture.

Mr. Benn

I have placed contracts at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, and at the Paisley College of Technology, for the setting up of permanent advisory centres to demonstrate low-cost automation techniques to industrial management and to provide short courses and advice on practical applications.

The response from industry so far has been most encouraging, but a final assessment must await the opening of the centres early in 1967.
