HC Deb 26 May 1966 vol 729 c126W
33. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science on what date, for what purpose and to whom, he or his Department disclosed that he was to appoint a committee of investigation into football and that the chairman would be the hon. Member for Northwich and that the hon. Member for Birmingham, All Saints, would be a member of the committee; and why this information was not first given to the House of Commons.

Mr. Denis Howell

I announced to the House on 9th February last year that the Government were offering to the football authorities a comprehensive inquiry into the state of football. There have been conversations and I have made preliminary inquiries, and I can only assume that the Press comments to which my hon. Friend refers arise from these.

However, I am not yet in a position to announce the terms of reference or the membership of the Committee but I hope to do so shortly.
