HC Deb 04 May 1966 vol 727 c113W
65. Mr. James Davidson

asked the Minister of Transport if she will make a statement on her policy with regard to the reopening of railway lines where the economic factors affecting their operation have materially altered since their closure.

Mrs. Castle

I and my predecessor have sanctioned closures only where there were no economic developments in prospect sufficiently firm and important to warrant retention.

If the national and regional plans now being evolved with the help of the Economic Planning Councils show a real need for reopening a closed line, I shall take whatever steps are necessary to meet the situation.
