HC Deb 09 March 1966 vol 725 c536W
Mr. Awdry

asked the Minister of Transport if she will give the number of miles of motorway between each entry and exit point for each of the motorways at present open or under construction.

Mr. Swingler

On the 525 miles of motorway now open or under construction there are or will be 102 junctions. The average spacing is therefore just over five miles. To list all the junctions and the distances between them could only be done by the use of a disproportionate amount of the Department's time.

Sir A. Meyer

asked the Minister of Transport what has been the year-by-year expenditure on motorway construction since 1951; and what estimate she has made of expenditure over the period 1965–70.

Mr. Swingler

Separate figures for motorways are not available before 1960–61. The figures for later years in the following table include the cost of land but exclude classified motorways and short by-passes on all-purpose trunk roads. Figures up to 1964–65 inclusive relate to England and Wales but after then only to England.

£ million
1960–61 21.299
1961–62 28.340
1962–63 40.205
1963–64 46.016
1964–65 54.423
1965–70 (estimated) 373
