§ 92. Mr. George Jegerasked the Minister of Transport what action she proposes to take to make the fitting and the wearing of safety belts in vehicles compulsory; and whether she will make a statement.
§ Mr. SwinglerOn I 1 th July my right hon. Friend circulated to interested organisations draft regulations requiring the fitting of seat belts in the front seats of cars and light commercial vehicles first registered on and after 1st April, 1967. She asked for comments by 22nd August.
My right hon. Friend does not propose to make the wearing of seat belts compulsory but will rely on publicity to encourage the maximum use of the belts and also to persuade the owners of vehicles not covered by the Regulations to fit and use seat belts.
