Mr. Ridley

asked the Prime Minister (1) if he will legislate to make strikes in pursuit of higher wages illegal for the next six months;

(2) with regard to workers whose wages are pegged to the cost of living, by what authority such increases as fall due are to be deferred until six months hence.

I must ask the hon. Member to await publication in the near future of the White Paper setting out the Government's proposals.

Mr. A. Royle

asked the Prime Minister what steps he intends to take to secure compliance in regard to the wage standstill by the Transport and General Workers Union in view of the policy of opposition pursued by that union.

The Government are engaged in discussions with both sides of industry on the best way to make their policy effective and I must ask the hon. Member to await the outcome of those discussions.
