40. Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

Mr. Diamond

The reductions, on which the Government has decided, must be followed by consultation at home and overseas and at this stage I cannot give further details.

47. Sir J. Rogers

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what amount of the announced reduction in Government overseas spending will be made in aid to under-developed countries compared with cuts in defence costs.

Mr. Diamond

The decisions relating to reductions in civil and military Government expenditure overseas require consultation in detail in many cases with Governments and others concerned, and at this stage I can give no breakdown of the figures.

Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state the.proportionate reduction in net Government overseas expenditure across the exchanges on civil and military account, respectively, which he expects to achieve by his proposed saving of £100 million.

Mr. Diamond

The reductions on which the Government has decided, must be followed by consultation at home and overseas and at this stage I cannot give further details.

Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by what date he hopes to have completed cuts in overseas Government expenditure, military and civil, of at least £100 million.

Mr. Diamond

The figure of £100 million will relate to the financial year 1967–68 as compared with 1966–67.
