HC Deb 25 July 1966 vol 732 cc193-4W
Mr. Brooks

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether, in the light of current proposals for the reorganisation of police areas, he will amend the terms of reference to clarify the role of the Royal Commission on Local Government in making recommendations on local authority responsibilities in relation to the police.

Mr. Crossman

No. The proposals of my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary for the reorganisation of police forces are without prejudice to the work of the Royal Commission. In preparing its recommendations for a new local government structure the Commission will be able to take into account the needs of police forces as of other local authority services.

Mr. Brooks

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he will amend the terms of reference of the Royal Commission on Local Government to empower it to investigate and make appropriate recommendations regarding a reorganisation of transport-undertakings in conurbations by putting all forms of public passenger transport under a unified local control.

Mr. Crossman

The terms of reference do not preclude the Royal Commission's considering this.
