HC Deb 25 July 1966 vol 732 c193W
65. Sir B. Janner

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether his attention has been called to the fact that over the past 12 months the total cost of fire damage rose to over £80 million as against under £40 million for 1961; in what ways the new Building Regulations are designed to assist in reducing fire losses in commercial and industrial buildings; and by what date these Regulations will begin to have an effect on controlling the rise in the cost of such losses.

Mr. Mellish

The fire precaution provisions of building regulations, although primarily concerned with safety, do secure substantial fire protection for buildings, and should have a progressive effect on the cost of fire losses as they are applied to all new buildings.
