HC Deb 22 July 1966 vol 732 c170W
Mr. Galbraith

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average number of parking meters for which a traffic warden is responsible in each of the London boroughs with parking meter schemes.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The figures for the London Boroughs in which traffic wardens are employed as parking attendants are:

Authority* No. of meters in operation No. of wardens in post† Ratio of meters to wardens
Westminster 8,311 329 25.2: 1
Camden 2,603 59 44.1: 1
Islington 423 21 20.1: 1
Hackney 325 13 25: 1
Tower Hamlets 198‡ 11 18: 1

* 79 traffic wardens are employed in Croydon and 8 in Southwark on duties not concerned with parking meters.

Parking meter attendants employed by the local authority operate at Croydon, Kingston and Woolwich.

† The figures for traffic wardens include 34 senior traffic wardens. Posted strengths in restricted parking zones take account of duties performed by traffic wardens other than as parking attendants or in connection with parking meters, as well as the ease of supervision of meters and their locations.

‡Includes 29 bays attached to one ticket machine.
