HC Deb 21 July 1966 vol 732 cc118-9W
46. Mr. James Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is aware of the urgent need for the creation of medical schools at the newer universities; and what are his plans for meeting this need, particularly at the University of Hull.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

I am aware that there is a need for more places for medical students. How and where provision needed for this should be made is for the University Grants Committee, in consultation with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Health. Substantial allocations for the expansion of existing schools have been made in current programmes and I understand that the Committee has received proposals for the establishment of new medical schools from 12 universities or colleges, including the University of Hull. Meanwhile, the Royal Commission on Medical Education is considering what changes may be needed in the pattern, number and location of the institutions providing medical education.
