90. Mr. Ronald Atkins

asked the Minister of Transport what is the total number of staff in her Department ; and how they are distributed with regard to responsibilities for roads, railways, waterways, and ports and harbours, respectively.

The number of staff in the Department on the latest return is 7,595. 6,034 are concerned with the wide field of responsibilities for roads, including 3,516 in the Traffic Area Organisation and 760 in the Road Research Laboratory ; 84 with railways ; 6 with waterways and 72 with ports and harbours. Common services and Sea Transport account for the remainder.
