§ Mr. SwinglerThe number of staff in the Department on the latest return is 7,595. 6,034 are concerned with the wide field of responsibilities for roads, including 3,516 in the Traffic Area Organisation and 760 in the Road Research Laboratory ; 84 with railways ; 6 with waterways and 72 with ports and harbours. Common services and Sea Transport account for the remainder.
