HC Deb 19 July 1966 vol 732 c46W
52. Mr. Hilton

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what was the total value of system-built housing contracts awarded by local authorities for the years 1963, 1964 and 1965 to private building contractors and municipal building departments, respectively.

Mr. Mellish

I regret that this information is not available.

53. Mr. Hilton

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what was the total value of housing contracts awarded by local authorities during 1965 on a negotiated tender basis to private building contractors and municipal building departments, respectively.

Mr. Mellish

The total value of housing contracts awarded to private contractors and direct labour departments in 1965 was £430,221,095 and £41,859,502 respectively. Twenty-nine per cent. of the contracts awarded to private contractors were negotiated. I have no details of the value of these contracts but they accounted for 37,.5 per cent. of all contractor-built dwellings. Figures for the proportion of direct labour schemes which did not go to competition are not available.
