Mr. Lomas

asked the Minister of Public Building and Works by what amount, in percentage terms, the Selective Employment Tax will add to contracts already placed by local authorities with builders ; and what direction has been issued as to how the increase should be met.

I estimate that the average increase would be about 1 per cent. Guidance will very shortly be given to local authorities which will give effect to the statement by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Second Reading Debate on the Selective Employment Payments Bill on 23rd June.
