HC Deb 18 July 1966 vol 732 cc21-2W
Mr. Edward M. Taylor

asked the Minister of Transport how many road accidents were reported in the year 1965; and what percentage of these accidents involved fatal and non-fatal injury.

Mr. John Morris

There were 299,229 personal injury accidents in 1965; of these 2.5 per cent. were fatal and 97.5 per cent. non-fatal.

Mr. Edward M. Taylor

asked the Minister of Transport what information she has regarding the numbers of road accidents which occurred in 1965 in consequence of the vehicle driver suffering a heart attack, a blackout or other sudden physical incapacity.

Mr. John Morris

Complete figures are not available, but investigations of accidents in Warwickshire and Hampshire by the Department's Area Road Safety Units have shown that the proportion of accidents caused by the sudden illness of a vehicle driver is only a fraction of one per cent.
