HC Deb 04 July 1966 vol 731 cc17-8W
93. Mr. Weatherill

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance how much money has been paid out by way of National Assistance to the dependants of members of the National Union of Seamen in the recent strike; and whether the money so paid out by the National Assistance Board will be recovered from the seamen concerned after the resumption of work.

Miss Herbison

To 28th June, the latest date for which figures are available, approximately £56,000 was paid in National Assistance grants in respect of the dependants of seamen on strike. Information is not available to show how much of that sum was paid for depen- dants of members of the National Union of Seamen. The National Assistance Board has no power to recover any of these payments.
