HC Deb 04 July 1966 vol 731 cc13-4W
86. Mr. A. Royle

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement on his recent visit to Kuala Lumpur and Jesselton; and if he will detail the steps that he took to improve Anglo-Malaysian relations.

Mr. M. Stewart

The main purpose of my very short visits to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore was to inform the Governments there of my discussions with the Foreign Minister of Indonesia. I had talks in Kuala Lumpur with the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Home Affairs and in Singapore with the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister. We took the opportunity to talk over a number of matters of common concern. In Kuala Lumpur this included discussion of certain points of difficulty between our two Governments. Our discussions were confidential but were frank and cordial. I hope that they will have led to better understanding.
