Mr. Kershaw

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many soldiers and airmen are now absent without leave from stations in Zambia, Swaziland and Bechuanaland.

Mr. Millan

Three airmen and six soldiers are now absent without leave for periods of more than 24 hours.

Mr. Kershaw

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what instructions he has issued to officers commanding troops in Zambia, Swaziland, and Bechuanaland regarding their giving to their troops information as to possible rôles for those forces; and what special undertakings regarding willingness to serve have been required of officers or men serving in those areas.

No special instructions have been given or undertakings required. Commanding officers have as usual briefed their units on the purposes of their deployment.
