HC Deb 09 February 1966 vol 724 c78W
51. Mr. Shepherd

asked the Minister of Transport what further research work has been done into the merits of yellow headlights; and whether she now intends to make them compulsory in the United Kingdom.

Mr. John Morris

A recent experiment by the Road Research Laboratory revealed no material difference between yellow and white lights in helping drivers to distinguish objects. My right hon. Friend's Working Party on the lighting of vehicles has recommended that headlights should be white. She does not intend, therefore, to make yellow headlights compulsory, but research proceeds into the effect of the colour of light on headlight glare.
