HC Deb 09 February 1966 vol 724 cc74-5W
136. Mr. T. G. D. Galbraith

asked the Minister of Transport how many accidents occurred in each of the last five years at 70 miles per hour or over; what percentage this is of the total number of accidents; and how many of the accidents caused death, how many serious bodily injury and how many occurred on motorways.

Mr. John Morris

We do not know. We do, however, know that the injury accident rate on American Expressways, where maximum speed limits generally apply, compare favourably with those in Europe, where general speed limits are exceptional. There is also evidence from America that the casualty rate is about three times higher at speeds over 70 m.p.h. than at speeds between 65 and 70 m.p.h.
