§ 92. Sir D. Walker-Smithasked the Minister of Transport whether she is aware that old people living within the area served by the London Transport Board's road services outside London are at a disadvantage compared with people of similar age and position who secure fares concessions under the Public Service Vehicles (Travel Concessions) Act, 1955, and the Travel Concessions Act, 1964; and whether she will initiate legislation to secure parallel concessions within the area of the Board.
§ Mrs. CastleOur 1964 Act extended to all municipal public service vehicle operators the power, already available to other operators, including London Transport, to offer concessionary fares to old people at their discretion. But I do not think that legislation to require such concessions would be justified.
§ 97. Mr. Frank Allaunasked the Minister of Transport what reply she sent to the Salford City Council's letter asking that non-local authority transport undertakers operating public service buses should be authorised to grant concessionary fares for elderly people and be given some financial inducement to do so, either directly or by contributions from local authorities in the traffic areas concerned.
§ Mrs. CastleI have sent my hon. Friend a copy of the reply. The council was referred to the Answer given to my hon. Friend the Member for Heywood and Royton (Mr. Barnett) on 27th October.
