HC Deb 02 February 1966 vol 723 c221W
65. Mr. Snow

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement about the introduction of separation allowances for Service men.

Mr. Mayhew

Yes. Starting from 1st April, officers and men of all three Services who have been separated from their families for at least 12 months because of service outside the United Kingdom, will qualify for an allowance of 4s. a day during further periods of separation. So will naval personnel appointed to certain sea-going ships on home sea service, and serving home legs of General Service Commissions. Because the incidence of separation increases with service, particularly in the Navy, a Service man who has completed nine years service and has been separated for three years, will qualify for an allowance of 8s. a day.
