HC Deb 21 December 1966 vol 738 cc328-9W
86. Mr. Gresham

Cooke asked the Minister of Transport if, in order to prevent vehicles colliding at a combined speed of 140 miles per hour, she will place a crash barrier along the whole length of the middle strip of motorways, as is the practice in the United States of America, and has also been adopted on the Kingston by-pass.

Mr. Swingler

A continuous crash barrier is not wholly beneficial in all conditions, especially on the less heavily trafficked motorways. Experiments are in progress to ascertain in what circumstances barriers can beneficially be provided.
