HC Deb 21 December 1966 vol 738 c363W
Mr. Victor Yates

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will make a further statement on the work of the Motor Industry Joint Labour Council.

Mr. Gunter

I reported to the House on 6th May about Mr. Scamp's first report as Chairman of the Motor Industry Joint Labour Council. A further report from Mr. Scamp is being published today. Copies have been placed in the Library of the House. The report surveys the action taken by the Council in relation to particular disputes and deals with a number of general problems of relations in the industry. These include the operation of disputes procedures, the large number of stoppages which take place before there has been an opportunity for these procedures to operate, and the case for systematic review of wage structures in the industry. The report suggests that there will be a continuing need for services of the kind provided by the Council in relation to individual disputes and also that more information and research is needed on the longer term problems of relations in the industry.

I propose in the New Year to meet representatives of managements and unions in the industry to discuss Mr. Scamp's report, the state of relations in the industry and the future work of the Council.
