HC Deb 03 August 1966 vol 733 cc119-20W
Mr. Howarth

asked the Minister of Transport why the halt sign has been replaced with a give way sign at the junction of the A6 and A510 at Finedon, Northamptonshire, in view of the number of accidents which occur at that junction.

Mr. Swingler

In our opinion an unconditional requirement to stop should rarely be imposed on drivers save at junctions where visibility is seriously restricted; if the stop sign is excessively used this extremely important safety precaution will be depreciated. At this site the visibility criterion is not met; the requirement to give way, with its associated sign and road markings, is, we consider, more appropriate and likely to be more effective.
