§ Mr. Harold Walkerasked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that in the present Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations the expression "illuminated area", in relation to a lamp, is defined as the area of the orthogonal projection on a vertical plane at right-angles to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle of that part of the lamp through which the light is emitted; and if, in the new regulations he is preparing, he will define the expression in simpler terms.
§ Mr. Tom FraserThis is a technical definition, the need for which was reviewed when the Road Vehicles Lighting (Amendment) Regulations, 1965, were being drafted, but it was not found possible to phrase the requirement in simpler terms. I understand that the definition is readily understood by the vehicle manufacturers who are mainly concerned with its application.
