37. Mr. Fell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what were the total numbers of civil servants, both established and unestablished, on 31st March, 1964, and on the most recent date for which the figures are available.

Mr. MacDermot

The total number of non-industrial civil servants in post at 1st April, 1964, excluding the Post Office, was 416,600, and the total number at 1st January, 1965, the most recent date for which figures are available, was 419,200. Including the Post Office the numbers were 692,200 and 697,600 respectively.

38. Mr. Fell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state the total cost in gross salaries of civil servants, established and unestablished, on 31st March, 1964, and at the latest date for which the figure is available.

Mr. MacDermot

£433 million, excluding the Post Office for the year ended 31st March, 1964. The estimated figures for the years 1964–65 and 1965–66 are £445 million and £475 million.
