asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will instruct local education authorities to bear the full cost of £4 for Oxford and Cambridge compulsory entrance examinations, together with reasonable travel costs and other expenses involved in taking these examinations.

No. This is best left to the discretion of local education authorities.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will seek power to abolish the charges for compulsory entrance examinations to universities.

Mr. Crosland

No. These charges at Oxford and Cambridge Colleges fall properly within the discretion of the College authorities.
