HC Deb 21 June 1965 vol 714 c158W
69. Sir G. de Freitas

asked the First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Economic Affairs what representations concerning his Department he has received from the Mayor of Kettering; and what reply he has given.

Mr. George Brown

The NorthamptonshireEvening Telegraph (16th June) carried a report quoting my hon. Friend as saying that Kettering was one of those towns that had died. The Mayor of Kettering sent me a telegram of protest. My hon. Friend immediately assured the Mayor that he had not used the words attributed to him, and that the report was a deplorable example of irresponsible journalism. The Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph have published on their front page my hon. Friend's reply and a letter from him to the editor.
