§ 32. Mr. Ioan L. Evansasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what representations he has received about the refusal of a temporary travel document to the Mayor of Dresden to open an exhibition of art and science at Coventry; and what reply he sent.
§ Mr. PadleyI have received representations about this matter from a number of hon. Members and others. I have nothing to add to the reply my hon. Friend the Minister of State gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Coventry, South (Mr. William Wilson) on 4th June.
§ 50. Mr. Will Griffithsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many East German nationals have requested travel documents from the Allied Control Office for the purpose of visiting Great Britain since October, 1964; how many have been granted such documents; and whether he will state the figures for similar requests in the period October, 1963, to June, 1964.
§ Mr. PadleyDuring the period October, 1964, to May, 1965, inclusive, 135W 934 East Germans applied for temporary travel documents for the purpose of visiting this country. 658 travel documents were issued and 7 were refused. For the period October, 1963, to May, 1964, inclusive the figures were 399, 298 and 7 respectively. The reason why the total of documents issued and documents refused does not equal the number of applications is that many East Germans do not call to collect documents after their issue has been approved by the Allied Travel Office.
