HC Deb 04 June 1965 vol 713 cc294-5W
Sir Alec Douglas-Home

asked the Prime Minister whether he will make a further statement on Her Majesty's Government's contribution to the Lord Mayor's Kennedy Memorial Appeal.

The Prime Minister

In answer to an earlier Question by the right hon. Gentleman, I announced on 4th November, 1964, that, subject to the approval of Parliament, the Government were willing to make a contribution to the Kennedy Memorial Appeal to match equally the amount contributed by the public towards the target of £1 million. Subsequently provision was made in the Estimates for £500,000 in anticipation that the Appeal target would be reached. The former Lord Mayor announced on the 7th May that £350,000 had been received to date in public subscriptions to the Appeal. The Government have now decided, subject to the approval of Parliament, to contribute the full £500,000 without awaiting the final result of the Appeal. This will enable the Trustees to send the first Kennedy Scholars to America for the academic year 1966–67.
