asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many additional staff have been recruited for the Welsh Office since his appointment; how many unfilled vacancies exist at the present time.

There are at present 434 either in post or already appointed and there are vacancies for a further 23. It is not possible to give the comparable figures when I was appointed because the staffs were then parts of the Departments from which responsibilities were transferred to me.
