HC Deb 28 April 1965 vol 711 cc49-50W
51. Mr. Geoffrey Wilson

asked the Minister of Transport if he will introduce amended regulations standardising the size and finish of steel tubes used as posts for road signs to a simpler range of specifications than the large variety at present required by local authorities, so that the recommendations of the Worboys Report can be implemented speedily and at less expense.

Mr. Tom Fraser

No. I cannot agree that there is an excessive range in the size and finish of steel tubes used. The increasing size of signs has made a slight extension necessary to our previous range in the diameter and lengths of posts. I do not think it appropriate for this range to be included in regulations. It will be recommended in the new Traffic Signs Manual and this should prevent any further complications in the range of sizes used. The finish of posts will also be dealt with in the Manual and variants will be limited to the minimum necessary.

54. Mr. Patrick Jenkin

asked the Minister of Transport why he rejected the recommendations of the Worboys Committee on Road Signs with regard to the signs to indicate No cycling or moped-riding and All motor vehicles prohibited.

Mr. Tom Fraser

It became clear after the Worboys Report was submitted that the inclusion of the red bar would be contrary to the European Protocol on Road Signs. The circular shape and red border themselves indicate the prohibition.
