asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what is the present position of negotiations for the payment of debts due to this country by Hungary and the Baltic States.

We are following up the approach to the Hungarian Government to which I referred in my Answer of 1st March on this subject.

Negotiations between the British and Soviet Governments on the subject of post-1939 claims are at present in recess in order that both sides may clarify a number of issues which arose in the first round of discussions. During this recess my right hon. Friend raised the question with Mr. Gromyko when he visited this country.
