HC Deb 12 April 1965 vol 710 c140W
Mr. Norwood

asked the Minister of Aviation what assistance Her Majesty's Government will give to the staging of the World Gliding Championships in the United Kingdom this year.

Mr. Stonehouse

The World Gliding Championships, which are to be opened by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Aviation on 29th May, have the full backing of Her Majesty's Government who are delighted to see this important international event being staged in this country.

My Department is advising and assisting the British Gliding Association, who are responsible for the arrangements, in a number of matters. The main support, however, comes from the Royal Air Force who are making available the airfield at South Cerney for the period of the Championships and are also giving practical assistance in a number of forms such as the provision of aircraft for towing purposes.

I am sure that hon. Members will themselves wish to help in any way they can to make this event, which has attracted entries from some 30 countries, as successful as it deserves to be.
