HC Deb 04 June 1964 vol 695 cc198-9W
Mr. Boyden

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the amount per week allowed for the purchase of food for men and women students, respectively, living in training colleges.

Mr. Hogg

In voluntary training colleges thirty shillings is allowed for both men and women for each full week's meals. Similar information is not available in respect of colleges maintained by local education authorities, but in 1963 their average expenditure per student on food was about the same.

Mr. Boyden

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, in calculating grants for university students, what amount is allowed per week for men and women students, respectively, to cover the cost of food for students living at home, living in a provincial university, living in London, and living in Oxford and Cambridge colleges.

Mr. Hogg

Apart from £30 per annum for books and instruments, £30 per annum vacation grant and £10 per annum travelling expenses, grants to students for maintenance are not allocated to specific elements.

Mr. Boyden

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many vacancies at present exist in training colleges for catering staff.

Mr. Hogg

The recruitment of catering staff is the responsibility of the governors of the colleges who do not report vacancies to me. I am aware, however, that there is a shortage of senior staff and I am considering what advice I can give to the colleges.
