* Separate figures not available for years prior to 1958.

From July, 1956—figures are not available for earlier periods—to the end of 1963 grants to private owners amounted to £638,202. The Exchequer contributes annually for 20 years, a sum equal to three-quarters of the annual charges incurred by local authorities in raising loans to meet the cost of making grants. Payments from the Exchequer to local authorities in respect of improvements to their own houses totalled £27,795.
